Trade unions
In Sweden, trade unions are present at most workplaces, primarily focusing on negotiating working conditions and managing unemployment benefits.
A trade union is an organisation where employees within a specific occupation or workplace come together to address issues related to working conditions and labour rights. Trade unions can provide support and guidance on matters concerning your work environment.
Most workplaces in Sweden are covered by a collective agreement Opens in new window., a written contract between the employer and the trade unions that regulates employment conditions, holidays, working hours, and other workplace matters.
In addition to negotiating work conditions, trade unions often manage unemployment benefit funds, known in Sweden as “A-kassa,” which provide financial support to unemployed members. Read more about unemployment benefits here Opens in new window..
As an employee, you may choose whether or not to join a trade union. Membership requires a fee.
