Overview
Pathway Semester General is designed for students who want to strengthen their academic English and study skills while gaining valuable insight into university life in Scandinavia. This one-semester program focuses on developing the ability to communicate information accurately and effectively in English, with attention to purpose, audience, and context.
Students will build critical and analytical thinking skills and learn how to adapt language to fit an academic setting. The program includes a selection of elective courses, giving students the opportunity to explore academic subjects and gain a head start on their intended degree path.
Pathway Semester General is ideal for students with a higher level of English proficiency (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent at entry) who need to fulfill additional entry requirements for their intended degree program. These may include further development of academic English, mathematics, or completion of foundational coursework.
In addition to academic preparation, the program also introduces students to Scandinavian culture and university life, helping them transition smoothly into their future studies—both academically and socially.

Programme Structure
Course Structure
Pathway Semester General consists of one semester of full-time study, comprising 30 credits. The programme includes a selection of elective courses that support students in meeting academic and language entry requirements for follow-up degree programmes. Courses may be preselected based on the student’s conditional offer or chosen from a range of available options.
All courses are taught in English and are designed to improve students’ proficiency in academic English, develop subject-specific knowledge, and build familiarity with higher education in Sweden.

Each course contributes to the programme’s aim of enhancing academic readiness through skill development in communication, critical thinking, intercultural awareness, and independent learning. Course availability may depend on eligibility criteria or prerequisites related to the student’s intended degree programme.
After the programme
Upon completion of the programme you will have recieved:
- direct entry to a degree programme at Jönköping University
- the English language level in reading, writing, listening and speaking necessary for enrollment in degree programmes at Jönköping University
- acclimatization to Swedish culture making it easier to live and study in Sweden
- support in adjusting to the demands, challenges and expectations of Swedish higher education
- basic knowledge in the Swedish Language
In addition, at the end of the Pathway programme, you will receive a certificate of completion. Depending on your course selections, this certificate may demonstrate skills equivalent to Swedish upper secondary school courses such as English 6 or Mathematics 3c. Completion of the programme can lead to direct entry into a bachelor’s or master’s degree programme at Jönköping University, provided you meet the specific conditions outlined in your conditional offer. When will be the last day for arrival?
We expect you to be in Gränna for the roll call when the semester starts. If you can not arrive on time and you have informed pathwayadmissions@ju.se, we grant late arrivals until one month after the start of your programme. Do not forget to inform accommodations@ju.se and your teachers at pathway@ju.se as well.
Are you arriving late?
Do not worry, we will ensure students who have contacted us can participate online. Note that to be able to keep your place you have to partake in lectures, workshops and group work online.
