Jönköping University engaged and inspired in Almedalen

For Jönköping University (JU), this year's Almedalen Week was an active week with participation in several seminars and hosting panel discussions.

“Almedalen is an important arena where decision-makers and social actors meet, and it is essential that we are visible, influential and showcase all the important work that JU contributes,” says Eva Gipperth, University Director at JU.

JU's Almedalen Week was filled with political discussions, seminars and events focusing on democracy and social development.

“Here in Almedalen, we have organized our own seminars, and our researchers have also been active in other actors' events. What we are seeing is a great deal of interest in both our research and in us as an educational institution,” says Eva Gipperth.

The university question is of interest to many

During the week, JU participated in seminars every day, and one of them was the one about JU getting full university status.

During the discussion, the issue was debated by JU's President Måns Svensson together with Rachel De Basso, member of the Regional Executive Board in Region Jönköping County, Julia De Geus, Chair of Jönköping Student Union, and Henrik Dahlström, CEO of the Jönköping Chamber of Commerce.

JU also hosted a panel discussion on the theme "Are we at war or at peace? Hybrid warfare and state-sponsored terrorism", which was a well-attended seminar.

During the panel discussion, Marco Nilsson, Associate Professor in Political Science, discussed with representatives of Swedish authorities and researchers how foreign powers can use state-sponsored terrorism in the form of sabotage and other hybrid attacks to damage and weaken society both before and during an armed conflict.

JU is active in the public debate

Many of JU's researchers participated in seminars during the week, and one of the researchers who participated for the first time was Johanna Falck, Doctor of Health and Care Sciences. She participated in the seminar “Focus on women's diseases, is there research on women's diseases?”

“Almedalen Week has been a fantastic, fun, and exciting event with lots of debates and lectures throughout Visby. I participated in a panel discussion and had the opportunity to emphasize my area of expertise, lipoedema, in the discussion on women's diseases,” said Johanna Falck at the end of the week.

Other researchers who participated were Annika Engström, Associate Professor in Work Organization, who spoke about how knowledge and research on leadership can become truly embedded in organizations, and Ernesto Abalo Caldera, Associate Professor in Media and Communication Studies, who participated in the region's seminar “Protecting democracy – roles, voices and directions in a changing era.”

In addition to the panel discussion on Jönköping University's path to full university status, JU’s President Måns Svensson also participated in Region Jönköping County's seminar, where the theme revolved around how our social system is divided into sectors – while residents experience the whole.
