JU students exhibited chairs at fair in Milan

14 Production Development with Furniture Design students at the School of Engineering (JTH) at Jönköping University (JU) exhibited their reinterpretations of the spindle back chair during Milan Design Week, on 16-21 April.

It was the second-year students from the Furniture Design programme that participated in the Superstudio furniture fair in Milan, which had around 120 exhibitors and 60,000 visitors. Several of the students have also been interviewed in the media about the fair and the spindle back chairs and sofas they exhibited.

“A lot of praise for our chairs”

“We have received a lot of praise for our chairs at the fair, so it was a great success for us,” student Abdallah Alsafadi told P4 West.

His classmate Carolina Löfman said in an interview with Nya Lidköpings-Tidningen that it felt very big and special to participate in Superstudio and that it was a real challenge to develop a new version of the spindle back chair.

“Feels really honourable”

Also on the trip were four teachers and 30 students studying the first year of Product Development with Furniture Design at JTH, which is given at Träcentrum in Nässjö.

“It was really cool to be at the Milan Design Week and Superstudio! All the exhibitions at the fair aroused great curiosity and we contributed to the fair, which feels really honourable. This has been a really fun project with a lot of problem solving and creativity,” says Victor Strand, Programme Manager.

“Very involved in every single exhibition”

All exhibitions at the Superstudio were installations. In the hall that the JTH students exhibited in, for example, there were only rounded shapes.

“The organizers were very involved in every single exhibition about everything from concept and placement to material selection and details, which was a lot of fun, says Viktor Strand.

Travel and accommodation for the students and teachers from JTH who participated during Milan Design Week was financed by the Öhrskogsstiftelsen at Träcentrum.
