JU students light up Alingsås

Sixteen students from the Lighting Design programme at the School of Engineering have taken part in one of the world’s largest lighting in public spaces workshops. The students worked alongside lighting designers from around the world to produce a five-week exhibition of light installations in the town of Alingsås in southwest Sweden.

On 22nd September, seven international lighting designers gathered with some 60 students from all over the world to illuminate selected sights or buildings in the town of Alingsås. Of the 60 international students who took part, 16 were from the School of Engineering’s Lighting Design programme.

The students were split up into different groups, working under a professional lighting designer who acted as ‘Workshop Head’. The main aim of the workshop was to teach and guide the students through the complete lighting design process of an actual full-scale project. The workshop lasted for seven days and was supported by the industry with cutting-edge lighting equipment. At the end of the week, the light installations went on show for the general public and will remain in place until 4th November.

Johan Röklander, who works as a laboratory technician in the School of Engineering’s Department of Construction Engineering and Lighting Science, was invited to be one of this year’s Workshop Heads. He and his team lit up a cycle path with an aurora borealis-inspired installation. 

“This was an amazing experience for everyone. The cultural diversity and international mix made a very creative atmosphere. For our Lighting Design students, it was a great opportunity to learn from professionals as well as make some international contacts for their future careers.”

Lights in Alingsås External link, opens in new window. is an urban lighting exhibition organised by the municipality of Alingsås and attracts 85,000 visitors every year. The light installations are up in Alinsgsås until 4th November.
