Towards a fairer and more sustainable research world

Jönköping University (JU) has now officially become a member of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA), an international coalition that works to develop the way the quality and value of research is assessed.

“We are proud to be part of CoARA. This is a natural step in our work to promote open science, diversity and quality in research,” says Martin Wallin, Vice President for Research at JU.

The membership means that JU supports CoARA's principles of promoting qualitative, transparent and inclusive research evaluation. It marks an important step in JU's work for a sustainable and fair academic system.

“JU already works well in line with the principles of CoARA. Our membership means that we are looking at how we can further strengthen our work with qualitative assessment,” says Eleonor Fransson, analyst at Jönköping University and one of those involved in the work with CoARA.

CoARA has been developed on the initiative of the European Commission together with Science Europe and the European University Association. The aim is to reform the system for assessing research and research merit and to create an international consensus. More than 800 organizations around the world have joined CoARA.

Participants in the initiative include higher education institutions, authorities, interest organizations and research funding bodies.

CoARA in Sweden and at JU

In Sweden, the work with CoARA is coordinated within the Swedish national chapter, which brings together higher education institutions, interest organisations and research funders. Together, the different organisations will implement the CoARA guidelines at a national level. The chapter is led by the Swedish Association of Higher Education Institutions (SUHF) and aims to create more inclusive, fair and sustainable ways of assessing research.

“For JU, the new membership means that we have one year to develop an action plan for how we will work with CoARA's guidelines going forward. The action plan will include where we are in the process and what steps we need to take to strengthen the work of assessing research and research merits. This work will go hand-in-hand with JU's action plan for HRS4R and the development of our quality system,” says Eleonor Fransson.
