Marco Nilsson, new professor at Jönköping University

Since 1 January, Marco Nilsson has been Professor of Global Studies with a focus on International Relations at the School of Education and Communication (HLK) at Jönköping University (JU). Among other things, he will continue his research, plan HLK's new bachelor's programme in Society and Security, and the new master's programme in Conflict, Risk and International Security. A professor introduction will be held at HLK on 19 February.

Marco Nilsson's academic career began in 2010 when he worked as Assistant Professor at the University of Gothenburg. He has worked at HLK since 2014, when he was employed as a as Assistant Professor in political science.

Most of Marco`s research has focused on violent conflicts in international relations. He began as a war researcher, trying to understand why some wars last longer than others. His research then focused on how ideology and religion can complicate peace negotiations.

“Recently, I have also analyzed how multipolarity (several countries or blocs having significant power and influence) in the international state system increases the risk of longer wars. Today, we can clearly see how multipolarity has increased with the decline of US power and both Russia and China challenging the US's position of power. This does not bode well in terms of the length of wars, as we have already seen in Ukraine, where Russian attempts to reshape the European security order have led to fighting that has lasted for several years,” says Marco Nilsson.

Today, most of Marco's research focuses on radicalization and how to prevent it. He believes that both the threat of war and radicalization are pressing security issues in Sweden today.

Reserve officer in the Finnish military

Marco Nilsson grew up with a grandfather who often talked about his experiences fighting against the Soviet Union during World War II. This, along with the fact that Marco is a reserve officer in the Finnish military, played a role in his decision to become a war researcher.

“And then, when several Swedes began travelling to civil war-torn Syria, radicalization felt like the most pressing security issue in Sweden,” he says.

Marco is very happy at JU and HLK. He also sees great opportunities for HLK to grow as a leading centre for research in various branches of global studies.

“At HLK, I have the best colleagues, and it always feels good to come to work. Here, I have had the opportunity to develop the business, especially with the two new programmes in security studies that will start in the autumn,” says Marco Nilsson.

Professor`s introduction

On Thursday, 19 February at 13:00 there will be a professor`s introduction, which will begin with Marco presenting his research. This will be followed by a discussion and question and answer session, as well as a reception with light refreshments.

“The professor`s introduction is a pleasant opportunity for new professors at HLK to talk about their research and then chat with colleagues in a relaxed setting. I will focus on my latest scientific articles on violent Islamist radicalization after the fall of IS,” says Marco Nilsson.
