Timur Uman
Professor, Business Administration
Accounting and Management Control
Research Focus
Professor Timur Uman’s scholarship is positioned at the intersection of corporate governance, accounting and control systems, and the management of demographic and cultural diversity within organizations. His work explores how top-level governance mechanisms—such as boards, auditing systems, and managerial control structures—influence organizational performance and transformation in both private and public-sector contexts.
A consistent theme across his research is the strategic role of diversity. He investigates how factors such as ethnicity, gender, and professional background interact with leadership style and institutional settings to affect innovation, well-being, and sustainability. This agenda is reflected in recent studies ranging from configurational analyses of diverse healthcare teams, to systematic reviews of governance and auditing in family businesses, hybrid organizations, and municipal corporations.
Contribution to Society
Timur’s research is grounded in real-world impact. Through a series of externally funded projects, he collaborates with healthcare providers, retail companies, and government bodies to co-develop practical solutions to governance and control challenges. His current research examines how diversity and leadership dynamics shape patient safety in multiprofessional hospital teams, and how control systems in retail can be leveraged to promote sustainable consumer behaviour.
Timur’s findings have been shared with public agencies, municipalities, and industry leaders, offering practical tools for improving safety, accountability, and resilience across sectors. His work supports inclusive, evidence-based governance that enhances both performance and societal value.
Academic Background and Professional Experience
Timur holds a BA in International Business from Concordia International University (Estonia), an MSc in International Business from Kristianstad University, and a PhD in Business Administration with a focus on Corporate Governance from Lund University. Before entering academia, he gained executive experience in finance and marketing, and he has served as a board member for several firms in Sweden and Latvia.
Since earning his doctorate, he has held academic positions at Lund University, Kristianstad University, Linnaeus University, and currently Jönköping International Business School (JIBS), where he joined in 2019 as a Professor of Accounting and Control.
His scholarly contributions include over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, numerous book chapters, editorial board memberships, and frequent conference contributions across the fields of management, governance, and accounting.
MMTC Affiliation
For Timur, MMTC is a natural fit. The centre’s mission—to examine the effects of digitalisation, sustainability, and globalisation on organisational transformation—closely aligns with his own focus on applied, governance-related research. MMTC’s interdisciplinary environment and strong industry ties enable him to develop and apply research that informs both academic discourse and societal practice.
